Tech Companies Plan Net Neutrality 'Day of Action'

Ron Wyden said last week that a proposal by the Federal Communications Commission — now led by an appointee of President Donald Trump — will end the principle of internet service providers treating all data the same no

The 170 organisations involved - including Amazon, Reddit and Netflix - are preparing to alter how their services are displayed on Wednesday 12 July as a warning against FCC proposals for deregulating how internet service providers (ISPs) treat customers.

The EFF wants to do this to highlight that giving up protections for net neutrality will give ISPs a "frightening" amount of control over a user's internet experience. "Many are getting creative and writing their own code or displaying their own banners in support of net neutrality that point to action tools".

Net neutrality advocates on Wednesday are holding a "Day of Action", perhaps their final push to keep the Internet "open, fast and awesome".

ISPs have argued that Washington is hyper-focused on them as gatekeepers, while keeping a hands-off approach on edge providers as though they were still struggling garage-innovators, rather than behemoths with staggering valuations and market power.

As with other ISP groups weighing in on Advocacy Day, USTelecom wants Congress to step in.

A decision on whether a u-turn on net neutrality rules will come into effect is due to be decided on Monday, although an online protest is happening today in a bid to convince the FCC to stay with the current set of rules.

The protest principally is aimed at a move by the United States communications regulator Federal Communications Commission (FCC) to remove an Obama-era rule that bars prioritisation of traffic.

IPhone 8 could make you wait to unlock two key upgrades
The Touch ID sensor might delay iPhone 8 OLED production even further, assuming Apple still plans to include it into the screen . Whatever shape the iPhone 8 launches in you shouldn't have too long to wait for it, with a September or October launch likely.

More than 170 internet giants including Netflix, Google and PornHub, will protest today against plans to remove rules protecting "net neutrality".

"Not only is this good for political speech, but this is the main economic engine behind the internet", he said. He also pushed back on Pai's claim that net neutrality would stifle innovation, saying the opposite is true for new and competing websites. Title II is not net neutrality.

"If ISPs (internet service providers) had charged for preferred treatment when Drew and Arash founded Dropbox in 2007, we might never have gotten off the ground", added Dropbox's general counsel Bart Volkmer, referring to its founders Drew Houston and Arash Ferdowsi.

Today, millions of people are protesting the FCC's plan to repeal the net neutrality rules that were put in place by the former Obama administration.

Furthermore, net neutrality ensures the independence of the web itself, and its ability to stay open and uncensored to all.

"The Day of Action isn't created to educate consumers about sensible policies, rather its goal is to scare them into thinking their internet experience will somehow suddenly be degraded if the FCC restores light touch regulation". The public will have until mid-August to send comments to the FCC before the final vote.
